Keg Wrap

Filed under: Random — noackjr @ 08:28 am Edit This

Behold, I give you the Keg Wrap:

Case student to brew up solution to keep beer kegs cool
Adam Hunnell receives $20,000 grant to develop Keg Wrap prototype

random image of keg on iceThis is outstanding. I am nearly at a loss for words, but not quite. If he actually succeeds in bringing the Keg Wrap to market, I predict keg sales will rise 20% while the price will drop 10%. Think about it: what do you usually get with a keg?

  1. a tap
  2. plastic cups
  3. a trash can
  4. bags of ice

Assuming it is designed to minimize condensation, the Keg Wrap eliminates numbers 3 and 4! The added convenience will boost sales, and not having to deal with trash cans or ice will reduce costs.

Cyrus Taylor, Armington professor of physics and director of the Physics Entrepreneurship Program, said “If this turns into the kind of market Adam has identified, it will be enormously exciting.

“We often think of inventions as having world-changing potential. But if you can use this kind of technology for a consumer product that makes people’s lives better, that’s fantastic,” Taylor said.

Let me tell you, this would make my life better:

Me: Only two things scare me, and one is nuclear war.
You: What’s the other?
Me: Excuse me?
You: What’s the other thing that scares you?
Me: Warm beer.
You: What?
Me: Warm beer. It’s flat you know. Smells like urine. No head.

The best part about the whole article:

A native of Washington, Pa., Hunnell conceived of the idea with some friends one evening while a sophomore at West Virginia Wesleyan College.

Aren’t most sophomores too young to drink?

  1. Good find noackjr!

I think this is an excellent idea. I have two main conerns: durability and washability.

Unless a KegWrap can be as cheap as a trash can then it needs to be able to be durable enogh to withstand a night of drinking around it. The bottom also needs to be sturdy enough to have the weight of a keg as well as a 300lb football player doing a keg stand.

Also, beer will get spilled on the kegWrap. The nice thing about a garbage can is that it has some spillage region which does not cause a mess. The KegWrap might not currently have a design for that.

    So here are some suggestions:
    - have a sturdy (maybe also slideable bottom, or slip proof I can decide) bottom
    - maybe have no bottom, depending on design???
    - have keg tap nozzle holder
    - have drip zome catcher.
    - make sure it does not obsorb too much old beer smell, it might get nesty otherwise.

If there are any other ideas, we should compile them and then send them to Adam Hunnell. This idea should succeed. Supercrime can help.

A high end Kegerator, built for durability and portability
Weights only 60lbs and can be powered by a cig adapter.
